Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

Designate a Sober Driver This Holiday Season

Warren County, Ohio, December 20, 2013 – The holiday season is upon us and so are the wonderful festivities. The holidays are a time for celebration, joy and visiting with loved ones, yet all too often the holiday spirit is destroyed by the recklessness of a drunk driver.

Atrium Medical Center’s Warren County Safe Communities Coalition (WCSCC) is joining forces with highway safety partners and local law enforcement across the county this December to remind everyone that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving, and that drinking and driving don’t mix.

“Whether you’ve had one or one too many, drinking and driving is never worth the risk,” said Joey Brumfield, Trauma Outreach Coordinator at Atrium Medical Center and Coordinator of WCSCC. “If you are going to drink, designate a sober driver, and encourage your friends and family to do so also.”

Twenty-nine percent of fatalities during the month of December from 2007 to 2011 occurred in crashes that involved drivers with blood alcohol levels above the legal limit of .08. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 760 people died as a result of drunken driving-related crashes during December 2011 alone.

In 2012, Warren County suffered great tragedy during the Holiday Season, seeing four lives lost to impaired driving. Although the risks of driving impaired are widely known, poor decisions are still made, and we continue to see too many lives lost to buzzed and drunk drivers.

“The holidays should be a time for celebration and joy, not tragedy,” said Brumfield. “Help us make Warren County and our roadways safer by never driving after drinking, and remember that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving!”
