What is a qualifying event?
A Qualifying Event is a major life change that may impact your benefits. If one of the events listed below occurs, YOU HAVE 30 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF THE EVENT TO MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR BENEFITS. The changes will take effect the following pay period after you make your changes via the on-line benefit enrollment process.
Example: You or your spouse give birth or adopt a child. You may add that dependent to your coverage (medical, dental, dependent life, etc.) from the effective date of the birth or adoption as long as you complete the necessary paperwork within the 30-day timeframe.
Example: Your dependent (son or daughter) becomes ineligible for dental or medical coverage because he/she reaches the maximum age limit or is no longer a full-time college student. Then you must drop them from the plan.
Here are examples of Qualifying Events:
- Marriage
- Divorce
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Death of a spouse or dependent
- Change in your spouse's employment
- Your dependent becomes ineligible
