Endobronchial Ultrasound
Lung cancer is often diagnosed after it has spread. Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) helps patients with lung and lymph node tumors get diagnosed more accurately--and earlier--so they have more treatment options. With EBUS, physicians can obtain tissue or fluid samples from the lungs and surrounding lymph nodes without surgery.
In this outpatient procedure, a brochoscope equipped with ultrasound is passed into the airways of the lungs. If a physician notices any suspicious areas in the lungs or lymph nodes, a biopsy is easily obtained. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and biopsy results usually are available within two days. EBUS can be performed on most patients, regardless of age.
EBUS is a remarkable improvement for patients. Previously, those with possible cancer in the lymph nodes would undergo invasive chest surgery to get an accurate diagnosis, which caused more health risks. Hospitalization lasted three to four days with a much longer recovery. Patients who undergo EBUS recover quickly and usually can go home the same day.
Pain Management Center
Atrium is the only hospital in the area with a designated pain management center. The Atrium Advanced Pain Treatment and Evaluation Center has two board-certified interventional pain management physicians. The doctors use interventional pain procedures to treat back and neck pain from herniated discs, degenerative discs, joint degeneration, and previous back or neck surgeries that failed.
The Atrium Advanced Pain Treatment and Evaluation Center performs the most spinal implants in Southwest Ohio. The staff is well trained in pain management procedures and the facility has state-of-the-art equipment. The new facility will increase the efficiency of procedures.
Family-Friendly Accommodations
The whole Atrium hospital has been designed to offer amenities for the patient’s family and friends. To accommodate the requests of family and friends, visitation at Atrium is 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Admitted patients have private rooms, with bathrooms in each room and pull-out beds for family and friends.
Atrium has several large, centralized waiting areas with wireless centers to help make friends and family members comfortable and stay connected. At Atrium, beepers are provided to family members that will notify them if the physician or staff needs to talk with them. The beepers can be taken anywhere within the main building without losing reception.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery offers an option to traditional open surgery that uses only a few small incisions. Performed by hand or robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgery can lead to less blood loss, faster recovery and reduced pain as compared to conventional open surgery.
