About Laboratory Services
The Laboratory Services Department at Atrium Medical Center (Atrium) provides quality testing for inpatients, outpatients, physician offices, extended care facilities, and home health agencies. Our laboratory professionals work closely with medical staff to provide clinical and anatomical pathology services. On average, between 70% and 80% of all medical decisions are based on laboratory data.
The laboratory at Atrium offers a comprehensive variety of tests—including thousands of different diagnostic tests, biopsy readings, and screenings—that help physicians diagnose and treat patients more quickly and effectively.
Expertise Every Step of the Way
Our laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and The Joint Commission. In addition, we’re affiliated with the Mayo Medical Laboratories, the diagnostic reference laboratory for the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Medical Lab specializes in esoteric laboratory testing for health care organizations throughout the United States and around the world. It acts as our primary reference laboratory, performing low-volume testing with results directly downloaded into the computer system at Atrium.
Quality and Convenience
In order to make it as convenient as possible for patients who need tests, our outpatient laboratory specimen collection is located directly inside the main hospital entrance. Now patients no longer have to physically travel to the testing laboratory—only their specimen does.
We also offer a laboratory specimen collection station located in the Professional Office Building, which is convenient for patients visiting physicians in that building. The laboratory at Atrium also offers five satellite outpatient collection sites in Middletown, Lebanon, Hamilton, and Mason. These patient service centers are comprehensive, offering collection of many types of specimens, everything from blood to urinalysis to throat cultures.
The laboratory at Atrium is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and is staffed with experienced technicians, technologists, and physicians who use the latest technological advances. We know we have patients’ futures under our microscopes, so we work to bring answers to doctors and patients as quickly as possible.
Our laboratory staff uses finely tuned skills, knowledge, and experience to diagnose illness and offer a course of action. We detect disease, document the effects of drug therapy, and scientifically analyze overall health. Our team consists of:
- Pathologists who are responsible for medical direction throughout the lab and specialize in examining surgical and other types of specimens
- Clinical Lab Scientists and Technicians who process and result a great majority of the tests
- Cytotechnologists who perform the initial evaluation of Pap smears and non-gynecologic specimens
- Histotechnologists who prepare the tissues for pathologists to read
- Laboratory Service Associates (Phlebotomists) who perform specimen collection from patients
- Other support staff, including personnel who manage the laboratory computer systems and perform clerical functions
Laboratory Services at Atrium plays an essential role in the quality and safety of patient care. We are committed to meeting the ever-changing health care needs of our community through clinical excellence, process improvement, continuing education, and the implementation of new technologies.
