Who is Marjorie A. Compton?
The Compton Center at Atrium Medical Center is named in memory of Marjorie A. Compton, longtime friend of Atrium Medical Center and Atrium Medical Center Foundation, the hospital’s fundraising affiliate.
A former secretary/receptionist at Armco Steel Co., Compton generously volunteered her time and service to Atrium Medical Center (formerly Middletown Regional Hospital) and its patients, completing nearly 4,200 hours of volunteer service over 20 years.
Diagnosed with cancer in 2002, she could no longer continue her volunteer work, but her support of the hospital did not end. Shortly before her death, Compton gifted 80 acres of her family’s Monroe farmland to Atrium Medical Center Foundation. Her contribution remains the Foundation’s single largest gift to date.
Treating More Than Cancer
The Compton Center is a wellness-based facility with an environment that is light, inviting, and relaxing. It is attached, and easily accessible to, Atrium Medical Center.
The caring staff at The Compton Center treats much more than just cancer. We provide infusions for patients with Crohn’s Disease, rheumatoid arthritis, gamma globulin infusions for pulmonary patients, IV antibiotics, iron infusions for the iron deficient and blood transfusions.
Infusion therapy is delivered in an open, solarium-style infusion area, featuring clusters of cozy recliners and flat-screen TVs. Patients can receive the latest treatments while napping in private or talking with others. Chairs are positioned near large windows that let in plenty of sunlight, allowing patients to enjoy the day while getting their infusions.
Cancer Care at The Compton Center
Cancer Care services are together in one convenient location at The Compton Center. The Center has its own private entrance and registration. Radiation oncology and infusion therapy/chemotherapy are just one floor apart, an added convenience for patients whose treatment plan calls for both. Our location, next to Atrium Medical Center, is ideal for anyone needing additional hospital services or immediate medical support.
Our Cancer Program brings proven experts and the most innovative cancer treatments right here to our community, offering the best possible outcomes for every patient.
Cutting-edge advances at the center include:
- CT Simulation technology enhances cancer treatment planning by using the highest quality CT imaging to target and map specific treatment areas.
- Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) uses the latest real-time imaging techniques to locate and pinpoint tough-to-reach tumors (such as those beside a major organ or artery), this technology makes many previously untreatable tumors treatable.
- Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) minimizes side effects to patients by using a computer-controlled radiation delivery system to shape radiation beams to the precise size and position of a tumor. This enables physicians to deliver the highest possible radiation dose to malignant areas while preventing damage to the healthy surrounding tissues.
- High Dose Rate Brachytherapy—This advanced treatment allows radiation oncologists to implant a source of high-energy radiation (such as radioactive seeds or beads) directly inside the body, as close as possible to the tumor. High-dose radiation directed to the tumor through a slender tube can dramatically shorten treatment time.
Our participation in clinical trials links our patients with new treatment protocols.
The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer
has honored us twice with its Outstanding Achievement Award.
