Atrium Medical Center Offers Free Mammograms to Women

Middletown, Ohio, April 28, 2009 – In these uncertain economic times, Atrium Medical Center’s Wilbur & Mary Jean Cohen Women’s Center is offering free mammograms to women who are uninsured, underinsured or meet certain criteria regarding their ability to pay.

“An annual mammogram is important for all women 40 and over, and we’re making this possible for those who don’t have the means to afford one,” explains Hugh Hawkins, MD, medical director of Breast Services at Atrium Medical Center.  “We want women who may be struggling financially to know that we are here for them and that there are organizations to help them take that first step.”

Atrium offers free mammograms through agreements with Premier Community Health, the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Project.  Women are encouraged to call these organizations to see if they meet the criteria to qualify.  If approved, appointments take place at Atrium’s Women’s Center, a soothing and supportive environment that provides the latest digital breast screening and diagnostic capabilities available today.

Premier Community Health
(937) 227-9423 or (866) 838-8973
Breast Cancer Foundation
(937) 229-7790

Patients must be age 40 or older, either have minimal to no insurance or deductibles over $250 and also meet income requirements. They must not have a history of cancer, implants are okay. Free transportation is available.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP)
(513) 584-4342 or (888) 727-6266

Patients must be uninsured and meet income requirements based on the number of people in the household. Health Care Reimbursement Account Program discounts do not disqualify a patient for enrollment in the BCCP. The BCCP will cover screening mammograms for women 50 and older and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound and biopsy exams for women 40 and older.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women receive an annual mammogram starting at age 40, obtain an annual clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional and perform monthly breast self-exams.
