Know the symptoms of a heart attack

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. More than 30 percent of the time, a heart attack is the first symptom. When you know the signs of a heart attack, you have a much better chance of surviving one.

In addition to chest pain or discomfort, women are somewhat more likely to experience other symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
Warning signs of a heart attack
  1. Chest discomfort. Many heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  2. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  4. Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
  5. For women, symptoms also can include unexplained feelings of anxiety, fatigue or weakness, especially during exertion.

Tips for Heart Disease Prevention

  1. Stay active. Exercise at least three times a week. Something as simple as taking a walk will make a difference.
  2. Stay lean. Eat a balanced low-fat, low-cholesterol, high-fiber diet. Reducing your weight reduces the strain on your heart.
  3. Stay smoke free. If you smoke, take steps to stop. People who smoke are two to four times more likely to develop heart disease than nonsmokers.
