Volunteering - Something for Everyone
For years, volunteers have been an important part of Atrium’s health care team. By assisting patients and supporting hospital staff, their helping hands allow our health professionals extra time for direct patient care. Volunteers support more than 20 hospital areas, including the Family Birth Center, the Emergency Trauma Center, the Rehabilitation Center, the gift shop, the information desk, nursing units and many more. Atrium also offers the following specialized volunteer opportunities.
Someone to Talk to
Volunteers in the Friend Program become “friends” to our patients by offering a kind word or listening ear. For patients experiencing boredom, stress or loneliness, these volunteers offer support by providing bedside conversation, playing cards and board games, reading or finding other ways to help pass the time. This program is offered to our patients seven days a week, morning, afternoon and evening. It’s perfect for a friendly, compassionate individual who enjoys one-on-one contact with patients.
Four-Legged Friends
A visit from a furry, tail-wagging friend can often brighten a patient’s day. Our Pet Therapy Program provides a feeling of home and helps bring a sense of comfort to our patients. It also helps lift the spirits of employees by offering a much-needed break in their work day. To qualify, your pet will need to successfully complete a licensed pet therapy program, and both your pet and pet handler will need to fulfill additional requirements.

Comfort that Heals
The Compton Center, home of Atrium Medical Center’s advanced cancer services, recently added some enhancements to increase the comfort of patients receiving cancer treatments and their family members. Two new private rooms, new recliners, new family and guest chairs for the infusion rooms, DVD players in all rooms, a blanket warmer and an ice machine were all added to help make cancer care a less fearful, more relaxing experience. These additions were made possible by generous donations from Atrium employees and volunteers to Atrium Medical Center Foundation’s “Comfort that Heals” Employee Campaign.
