Atrium Medical Center Receives Safe Communities Grant

Federal Funds from Ohio Traffic Safety Office Help Save Lives in Warren County

(Warren County) – Atrium Medical Center’s Division of Trauma Services is pleased to announce the inception of Warren County Safe Communities Coalition (WCSCC), a federally funded grant awarded through the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO). The grant focuses on motor vehicle and traffic safety awareness with a primary goal of decreasing the number of motor vehicle related fatalities and injuries in Warren County. With the help of Safe Communities coalitions throughout the state, Ohio’s roadway fatalities have decreased to near record lows. In 2010, there were 1,080 recorded fatalities statewide. In 2011, that number decreased to 947, a 12% improvement from the previous year.

”It is our responsibility as a trauma center to assist in decreasing preventable injuries in the communities we serve. These funds are critical to ensuring that we are doing everything possible to keep our local communities safe,” said Sara Tompkins, Trauma Program Manager at Atrium Medical Center and Director for Warren County Safe Communities Coalition. Based on crash data from the state as well as the types of patients being seen at Atrium’s trauma center, we have identified restraint use, impaired driving, distracted driving and motorcycle awareness as priorities for Warren County, and we are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to address these safety issues.

Crash data shows that 226 crashes related to impaired driving caused 119 injuries and 3 fatalities in Warren County just in 2011. Warren County Safe Communities will partner with local law enforcement agencies, businesses, other hospitals and key community members to increase our county’s traffic safety awareness by offering several outreach campaigns and educational opportunities throughout the year. If anyone is interested in actively participating to make a difference in Warren County, contact Warren County Safe Communities Director Sara Tompkins at (513) 420-5186, or Joey Brumfield, Warren County Safe Communities Coordinator at (513)-705-4713.
