Feds Warn against Cut and Paste in EMR

Federal officials say that the cut-and-paste features (also known as “cloning”) common to electronic medical records (EMR) invite fraudulent use of duplicated clinical procedures. Cloning presents a risk that inaccurate and potentially dangerous information will enter a patient’s records.  In addition, cloning may result in billing for more services than were actually performed.

Premier Health’s guidelines for the use of copy and paste functions in Epic are found in the EMR Documentation Standards for Physicians and Other Allied Health Professionals Policy.
