A First for Premier Health: Clinical Pathways
Through the hard work of a host of physicians and nurses during the Innovate process, in March, Premier
Health will be launching Clinical Pathways for acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial
fibrillation chest pain, and percutaneous coronary intervention. The Clinical Pathways are comprised of
enhanced order sets, which organize orders and outcomes in various “steps,” based on time frame and patient
condition. The pathways are built to improve adherence to evidence-based practices, including core measures
and other care requirements. They include tools for nursing to document pathway outcomes and care plan goals
focusing on the patient’s progression from admission through discharge, in order to improve value by reducing
costs and improving outcomes. They are initiated by the physician upon patient admission, similar to previous
order sets. Additional education will be forthcoming throughout the next month.
Premier Health is one of only a few systems utilizing this powerful new Epic functionality, and the first
demonstrating such sophisticated integration with our quality programs.
