Premier Launches TAVR Program
The Premier Health Heart & Vascular Institute is launching a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) program – the first of its kind in the Dayton area—for patients who have been diagnosed with aortic stenosis.
TAVR is an alternative procedure that can replace the aortic valve while the heart is still beating. This less invasive procedure can eliminate the need for cardiopulmonary bypass. It is an option for patients who, due to advanced age or co-morbid conditions, are not considered candidates for open-heart surgery.
For the first phase of the TAVR program, the procedure will be offered only at Miami Valley Hospital, which was selected based on facility capabilities, including the location of the hybrid OR lab.
Premier is in the process of building a physician panel, composed of medical staff from across the system. The panel will assist with the review of all patients referred for TAVR or other valve procedures, under the auspices of the Premier Health Valve Center of Excellence. The virtual center will include a dedicated program manager, who will coordinate information for the physician panel to review each case, address pre-operative education, schedule cases and post-operative care, and follow patients for one year, post procedure.
Patients referred to the TAVR program for evaluation will have all pre-evaluation testing performed at the referral site. Patients who qualify for the TAVR procedure will return to their primary cardiologist for ongoing care, post procedure. Patients who do not meet the selective TAVR criteria will remain at the referral site with the referring cardiologist, along with a treatment recommendation from the physician panel – including surgical or medical management.
The multidisciplinary TAVR team, including interventional cardiologists; cardiothoracic surgeons; echocardiologists; cardiac anesthesia; catheterization lab; and OR staff, invite referring physicians with patients selected for TAVR to be present in the OR during the procedure.
Special thanks goes to the staff, who spent countless hours evaluating and planning the creation of the TAVR program:
