Genetic Testing and Counseling

Atrium Medical Center has a genetic counselor who can address your breast cancer concerns and discuss options with you. Through this service, we offer women knowledge and personal support.

Genetic Counseling and Testing

Although most breast cancers occur in women who do not have a strong family history of the disease, five to 10 percent are linked to a genetic predisposition for the disease.

As advances in understanding the causes of breast cancer develop, researchers have identified certain genes that—when altered or mutated—increase a woman’s risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer. In particular, women who have an alteration in BRCA genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) have a significantly increased chance (up to 85 percent) for developing breast cancer or ovarian cancer (up to 45 percent).

Tailored Risk Management Plans

Prevention, screening and early detection are the best ways to help reduce the chance of developing breast cancer for women at increased risk. A tailored plan for addressing breast cancer risks may include:

  • Increased observation
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Chemoprevention
  • Preventative surgery

High Risk Breast Cancer Services

For those women considered high risk due to personal or hereditary reasons, our team is dedicated to providing a comprehensive breast cancer risk evaluation, follow-up care and education. If additional services are needed for a woman at high risk of breast cancer, she can be referred to the High Risk Breast Center at Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville for additional services.
