Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology procedures at Atrium Medical Center help diagnose, reduce pain and improve the quality of life for cancer patients.

Making Biopsies Easier on Patients

With interventional radiology, tissue samples can be obtained without open surgery (a procedure that penetrates the skin or enters a body cavity). Image-guided biopsy is usually performed using a moving x-ray technique (fluoroscopy, CT, ultrasound or MRI) to pinpoint the exact location of the abnormality. The procedure is less painful and requires less recovery time than open surgical biopsy.

Interventional Radiology Cancer Treatments

Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) - a focused heat treatment used to treat cancer in patients with liver tumors. It is performed with a probe programmed for very specific temperatures. This treatment can be used on one or several small lesions in the liver.

Cryoablation - delivers energy directly into the tumor similar to radio frequency ablation. However, rather than killing the tumor with heat, cryoablation uses an extremely cold gas to freeze it.

Vertebroplasty – is an outpatient procedure that offers relief to patients with prolonged and debilitating pain from compression fractures in the spinal vertebrae. The interventional radiologist inserts a needle through a small incision in the back. A cement-like material is injected into the vertebra stabilizing the fracture.

Your Interventional Radiology Team

Our interventional radiologists are uniquely skilled in using the vascular system to deliver targeted treatments via catheter (small flexible tube) throughout the body. Cancer can be attacked without affecting other parts of the body.
