Interventional Radiology

The Interventional Radiology program is led by a fellowship-trained radiologist and provides a variety of minimally-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. One such specialty procedure is venous radiofrequency ablation to eliminate varicose veins.

Interventional Radiology procedures are less-invasive, targeted treatments performed using imaging for guidance. These procedures have less risk, less pain, and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Interventional Radiology includes both vascular intervention and non-vascular intervention. It incorporates techniques with image guidance, using CT, fluoroscopy, or ultrasound. Interventional Radiology is done in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

For early detection, screening and evaluation, our sophisticated capabilities at Atrium Medical Center allow patients to receive the highest quality of care. Our combination of advanced technology and a highly-skilled staff deliver comprehensive care for a positive and safe experience for our patients.

Minimally-invasive Procedures

The Interventional Radiologist at Atrium Medical Center performs minimally-invasive procedures for the treatment of various conditions:

Radiofrequency ablation is an outpatient medical procedure in which part of the electrical conduction system of the heart, tumor, or other dysfunctional tissue is heated, destroying local cells.

  • Oncology– destroy tumors
  • Vascular - used in the treatment of varicose veins

Cryoablation

Cryoablation is an outpatient procedure that kills and destroys cells by freezing them.

  • Oncology – cryoablation kills tumors by using extreme cold gas to freeze tumors

Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty is an outpatient procedure for stabilizing compression fractures in the spine.  Bone cement is injected into the back bones that have cracked or broken.
